FAQS on Blood Donation
We have to donate blood the only source of blood is available us up or own fellow humans as it
cant be synthesized in a factory. It helps people in need and help people in our community.
Besides this there are many other points:
a. If we donate blood it saves life of needy and keep our Nation’s blood supply stable.
b. As blood donation is a gift of life Thalassemia patients need frequent transfusion, cancer
patients, surgical and maternity hospitals need blood everyday day.
c. Blood components like blood plasma needed in burns cases and specific bleeding
conditions and clotting dissorders
d. Platelets are used in Cancer patients, dengue patients if the platelet count is low
Not at all!! but sometimes for sensitive people yes !!some sort of physical weakness you might
feel but it’s temporary feeling.
if you take a proper rest and keep your body hydrated you will be alright within next few hours
and you can resume your work.
Females Can donate blood after every 4 months.
For male after every 3 months they can donate Blood
Blood donation can be done by anyone who is healthy and who meets below mentioned
parameters:
Blood donation age limit: 18 to 65 years
Weight above 45 kg
Haemoglobin above 12.5 gm/dl
Blood donation cannot be done by someone:
- Who has an infection that can be transmitted through their blood, such as HIV, HBsAg, HCV, or Malaria
- With comorbidities like post-angioplasty or stroke patients
- Who has recently had a tattoo or a history of dental root canal, major, or minor surgery
- Who is currently taking antibiotics
- Drink extra fluid and avoid heavy physical activity such as weightlifting for about 24 hours.
- If you are feeling weak, lie down with your feet up until that feeling passes.
- Keep your bandage on and dry for the next 4 hours.
- Have a good sleep and nutritious diet; avoid processed food.
- Make sure you are drinking enough water.
- In the last 72 hours, ensure that you haven’t had a cold, flu, or fever.
- Do not smoke or consume alcohol a day before blood donation.
- Ensure that you had a good sleep before blood donation and eat healthy food.
- Avoid blood donation immediately after lunch. Donate blood after half an hour, and after a light breakfast, wait for 15 minutes.
- Wear a shirt with short sleeves or a t-shirt that you can roll up above your elbows.
Women can donate blood who has haemoglobin more than 12.5 gm/dl, weight 45 kg or
more and not in her menstrual period. Breast feeding moms are not allowed to donate
blood.
Cancer patients suffer from low platelet count. Without platelet transfusion they can face life threatening bleeding because of low platelets the other types of requirements of platelet
includes organ transplant surgeries, and dengue, malaria patients
Apheresis is the machine used to collect the platelet. The blood is extracted and platelets are
separated by the machine. Rest of blood consisting plasma, red blood cells are returned back to
the donor. Prior to donation we check your CBC report for sufficient platelets.
In following conditions your blood is not accepted.
If your blood shows positive results for HIV,HCV,Hepatitis B and C carrier .Further counselling
will be required with expert doctors.
The blood is issued against specific requirements from Hospitals. The components of blood are
also required against specific requirements as mentioned above.
The blood can be issued to the donor for his personal requirement, within 1 year from the
donation at no cost.
